Pick the Right Camp

Camp season is one of the best opportunities a prospect has to create visibility, build relationships, and compete in front of decision makers. But that opportunity only pays off if you are intentional about where you go.
Before we talk about how to prepare and how to perform, we have to talk about how to choose.
Know What You Are Walking Into
Not all camps are built the same. Understanding what each one is designed to do helps you spend your time and money in the right places.
Evaluation Camps are hosted by college programs on their own campuses. Coaches are watching every rep with a purpose. If a school has shown interest in you, their camp is worth serious consideration. But do not count yourself out just because they have not reached out yet. Show up, compete, and prove yourself.
A strong performance at an evaluation camp can start a conversation that was not there before.
Mega Camps are large multi-school events where coaches from multiple programs attend under one roof. These events get a mixed reputation, but the reality is that coaches show up to these for real reasons. They know that many prospects cannot afford to travel all over the country, so they come to you. Some coaches are there specifically to evaluate players from a region they know is talented but rarely gets to visit.
Do not write off mega camps. The right one, at the right time, can put you in front of coaches who would never have seen you otherwise.
Showcase Events are events where you pay to be measured, timed, and profiled by a recruiting ranking service. College coaches are generally not on site evaluating. You are performing for a camera and a stopwatch, with the primary outcome being a star rating attached to your name.

Here is something worth knowing about stars: they fluctuate. Some prospects do not receive stars until after a college program offers them. That tells you everything you need to know about where stars actually come from. Coaches recruit film, fit, and production. Save your showcase budget for events that put you in front of actual coaches, because you can get measured and timed at evaluation camps and mega camps without paying specifically for a profile.
The Money Grab Conversation
The idea that camps are just money grabs for coaches is something people say, and while there are some events out there that are more about revenue than evaluation, do not let that thinking cost you an opportunity.
Even in an imperfect environment, a football camp is a chance to stand out. If you show up and separate yourself from the competition, people notice. Coaches talk. The athlete who stands out gets noticed, and that attention can create motion in your recruitment that did not exist before.
The goal is not to avoid camps out of skepticism. The goal is to choose wisely, show up prepared, and make something out of every opportunity in front of you.
Start Close to Home
Before planning trips across state lines, look at what is available near you first. Camps within driving distance cut your costs, eliminate travel fatigue, and let you attend more events without burning your budget on a single trip. Coaches recruiting your region are already looking for prospects they have not yet discovered nearby.
Start with schools within a reasonable drive, especially any that have already shown interest. Once you have worked through those opportunities and have a clearer picture of where your recruitment stands, then you can evaluate whether a larger event further away makes sense.
Being strategic with geography is not about limiting yourself. It is about making the most of every dollar and every rep.
Before You Register
A few things worth thinking through before you choose a camp:
Has this school shown any interest in me? If so, their camp deserves a strong look.
Are coaches from programs I care about on the list? You cannot always confirm who will be there, but the list is the best information you have. Trust it, and go compete regardless.
Can I get there without exhausting my body or my budget? You want to arrive rested. Fatigue shows up in your performance whether you feel it or not.
What am I actually paying for? Know whether the event puts you in front of coaches or in front of a camera before you write the check.

The Bottom Line
Prioritize schools that have shown interest. Take advantage of what is nearby before spending money to travel. Understand what each type of event is designed to do. And do not let star ratings or showcase profiles distract you from what coaches actually value.
